  1. Wedge or stake the log so it cannot roll, ideally on low stands at a comfortable height.
  2. Clamp the mill to your bar, set the posts to your first slab thickness, and check both ends sit square.
  3. Fasten a straight ladder, board, or rail to the top of the log to guide the opening cut.
  4. Start the saw, bring it to full throttle, and feed the mill steadily along the guide, letting the ripping chain pull itself through.
  5. Remove the top slab and the guide, lower the mill by your next thickness, and repeat on the freshly milled face.

Keep the saw at full throttle throughout, because lugging the engine at part-throttle overheats it, and never force the cut; a sharp chain does the work. Run plenty of bar oil, take breaks to let the saw cool, and mill only outdoors in good airflow, because a big saw run continuously produces dangerous exhaust.

How do you make the first cut with a chainsaw mill?

The first cut with a chainsaw mill is made against a straight guide fixed to the top of the log, because the mill needs one true, flat reference before it can cut parallel slabs. Screw a rigid ladder, a straight board, or a slabbing rail to the log, run the mill along it, then remove the guide.

This opening pass decides the flatness of every slab that follows, so take time to square and fasten the guide firmly and check it is level along the whole log. Even pressure through the whole pass avoids snipe, the dip or ridge that appears when you lean on the mill as it enters or leaves the wood. Support the slab near the end of the cut so it cannot pinch the bar or tear as it drops. On the safety side, mill only outdoors, run generous bar oil, take breaks to let the saw cool, and keep both hands on the handles and your body clear of the bar throughout.

What do you do after each slab?

After each slab you clear the chips, reset the height posts down by your next thickness, and inspect the chain and bar before the next pass. Milling dulls a chain fast, so this is the natural point to check the edge and top up bar oil.

Lift the finished slab clear, stack it ready for stickering, and look at the cut face: long shavings and a smooth surface mean the chain is still sharp, while dust and a burnished face mean it is time to sharpen. Refuel if the tank is low, let the engine cool if it has been working hard, and only then start the next cut. Working in this steady rhythm protects both the saw and the quality of your boards.

What safety and drying steps follow milling?

Once milling is done, the wet slabs must be stickered and dried for months before use, and the saw needs cooling and cleaning after its hard run. Fresh slabs are heavy and unstable, and will cup or split if stacked flat or used green.

Sticker the slabs with even spacers so air reaches every face, keep the stack off the ground and under cover, and seal the end grain to slow checking; roughly a year per inch of thickness is the air-drying rule of thumb.
