Can you use regular motor oil as chainsaw bar oil?
Regular motor oil will lubricate a chainsaw bar in an emergency, but it is a poor long-term substitute for purpose-made bar and chain oil. The difference is tack, meaning stickiness. Bar oil contains additives that make it cling to the chain as it races around the bar, so it stays where it is needed. Thinner engine oil lacks that tack, and centrifugal force flings much of it off the chain.The practical result of using motor oil is an under-lubricated bar and chain that run hotter, wear faster, and can even glaze the bar rails. It also throws far more oil mist around, coating you and the work with spray. In cold weather, ordinary motor oil is often too thick to flow through the automatic oiler at all, starving the bar just when friction is highest.
Purpose-made bar and chain oil is inexpensive and sold everywhere saws are, so there is little reason to improvise except in a genuine one-off pinch.
How much bar oil should a chainsaw use, and how do you check the oiler?
A chainsaw uses roughly one full bar-oil reservoir for every tank of fuel, so the two should run low at about the same time. If the oil is still full when the fuel is gone, the oiler is under-feeding; if the oil empties long before the fuel, it is over-feeding or leaking.Check the automatic oiler in a few seconds:
- Start the saw and let it reach operating speed.
- Hold the bar tip a few inches from a clean, light surface, such as a pale log or a piece of cardboard.
- Rev the saw; a healthy oiler throws a visible line or spray of oil onto the surface.
- If no oil appears, stop and clear the bar groove and oil holes, and check the reservoir and oil pickup, before cutting again.
Some saws have an adjustable oiler screw to raise or lower the flow; long bars and hard, dry wood need more oil, so turn it up for those. Running a bar dry, even briefly, blues the steel and ruins the chain, which is why the oil top-up belongs in every refuel.
When does a bio-based or winter-grade bar oil make sense?
Choose a specialised bar oil when the season or the site calls for it. A thinner winter-grade oil flows through the oiler in the cold, where standard oil can thicken and starve the bar, while a bio-based bar oil suits cutting where run-off matters.Winter-grade oil is worth keeping if you cut in freezing conditions, because a standard grade that will not flow leaves the bar dry just when friction is highest. Bio-based, vegetable-derived bar oils are formulated to cling like mineral bar oil but break down more readily, so many owners use them when cutting over soil, near water, or in gardens where oil mist lands on plants. These are engineered for the job, unlike kitchen cooking oils, which lack the tack and can go rancid. Standard mineral bar oil remains the cheapest all-round choice for general cutting. What can you use as a one-off substitute if you run out of bar oil?
If you run out of bar oil mid-job, a similar-viscosity oil is a better stopgap than running the bar dry, but treat every substitute as a genuine one-off. The order of preference, best to worst, is straightforward.- Any purpose-made bar and chain oil you can borrow, always the first choice.
- A clean, mineral-based oil of similar thickness to bar oil, accepting that it will fling off faster and lubricate less well.
- A bio-based or vegetable bar oil made for saws, if that is what is to hand.
Avoid used engine oil, which carries abrasive metal particles and combustion acids that harm the bar, chain, and your skin, and avoid thin oils that will not cling at chain speed. Whatever you use as a substitute, top it up more often, keep the cut light, and switch back to proper bar oil as soon as you can.
