How do you sharpen a chainsaw chain?

Sharpen a chainsaw chain by filing each cutter with the correct-diameter round file, held at the top-plate angle stamped on the cutter, using an even number of strokes per tooth. Work one side of the chain, then turn the saw and do the other, so every cutter ends up the same length and angle.

Start by tensioning the chain and clamping the bar so it cannot move, ideally in a vice. Pick a reference cutter, file it until the edge is bright and sharp, and note the number of strokes; then give every following cutter the same count. A file guide or a filing gauge holds the correct angle and file height for you, which is the easiest way for a beginner to get consistent results. File from the inside of each cutter outward, keeping the file level.

Why does even filing matter so much?

Even filing matters because the chain steers itself with its cutters, and uneven teeth make it cut in a curve. If the cutters on one side are longer or sharper than the other, that side removes more wood each pass and the bar wanders off line, which also stresses the bar rails and tires the operator. Counting strokes and filing to the shortest cutter is what keeps both sides equal, so the chain tracks straight and cuts a flat-bottomed kerf. This is why experienced cutters reset every cutter to match the most worn one after a chain hits dirt, rather than just touching up the teeth that look dull.

What about the depth gauges?

After sharpening the cutters, check the depth gauges, the small fins ahead of each tooth that control how deep the chain bites. As cutters shorten, the depth gauges must be lowered slightly with a flat file and a depth-gauge tool, or the chain will not cut even though the teeth are sharp. Skipping this step is the most common reason a freshly filed chain still cuts poorly. Do not overdo it, though: gauges filed too low give each tooth too big a bite, which causes grabbing, rough cutting, and more kickback. Lower them a little every second or third sharpening rather than every time, using the gauge tool as the reference.

When should you use a grinder or a dealer instead?

Hand filing suits routine touch-ups, but a bench grinder or a dealer sharpen makes sense when a chain is badly damaged. A loop that has hit a rock or nail can have chipped, unevenly worn cutters that take a long time to bring back by hand, and an electric grinder resets them all to the same length and angle quickly. If you are not confident, a dealer can grind a chain cheaply and it comes back cutting like new. Many owners keep a spare sharp chain and swap it in the field, then sharpen the dull one at the bench where the light and the vice make the job easier.

What are the most common sharpening mistakes?

The most common sharpening mistakes are filing cutters unevenly, using the wrong file diameter, ignoring the depth gauges, and letting the chain get so dull it takes heavy filing to recover. Uneven cutters steer the saw; an oversized file rounds the cutting corner while a small file leaves a hook that grabs; untouched depth gauges leave a sharp chain that still will not feed; and a neglected chain needs so much steel removed that its life is shortened. The cure for all four is the same discipline — right file, consistent angle, equal strokes, gauges checked — plus sharpening little and often instead of waiting until the chain is ruined.

A worked example: a field touch-up

Suppose a homeowner is cutting seasoned hardwood with an Oregon 91PX chain and it starts throwing dust and pulling right. The fix is a two-minute touch-up: clamp the bar, fit a 5/32-inch file in a guide set to 30 degrees, and take three even strokes on every left-hand cutter, then turn the saw and take three on every right-hand cutter. Check the depth gauges with the gauge tool, and if the chain has been sharpened several times, one pass with the flat file brings them back. The chain now throws chips again and cuts straight.
