Loosen the bar nuts a half-turn so the bar can move.
Hold the bar nose up with one hand.
Turn the tensioning screw until the chain is snug against the underside of the bar with no sag.
Still holding the nose up, tighten the bar nuts fully.
Pull the chain around by hand with a glove to confirm it moves freely, then do the snap test.
Recheck after a few cuts, since a chain that heats up and is retensioned hot can end up dangerously tight when cold.
What goes wrong if the tension is off?
Wrong tension causes distinct problems at each extreme, so the symptom tells you which way to correct. Too loose and the chain rattles, cuts roughly, can climb the bar rails, and in the worst case throws off the bar toward the operator; the drive links may lift out of the groove on the snap test. Too tight and the saw bogs, the bar and chain overheat and discolour, the chain wears the rails fast, and the pull cord feels heavy on a gas saw. The correct middle — snug underneath, free by hand, snapping back cleanly — protects both you and the bar.
Does a tool-less tensioner change the method?
Many homeowner saws now use a tool-less tensioner — a dial or knob instead of a screw and separate bar nuts — but the target is identical: snug underneath, free by hand, and snapping back cleanly on the lift test. Loosen the outer locking knob, turn the inner dial until the chain is snug with the bar nose held up, then lock the outer knob down. Tool-less systems still need the same cool-chain rule and the same break-in re-checks during the first hour, because the chain stretches regardless of how it is adjusted.

In practice, a good habit is to check tension every time you refuel or swap a battery, and always after the first few cuts with a new chain. Lift the chain at the middle of the bar; if a full drive link pulls clear of the groove it is too loose, and if it will not lift at all it is too tight.
