How do you stop a chainsaw leaking bar oil in storage?
You can't fully stop a chainsaw weeping bar oil, but you can control where it goes. The oiler system is designed to leave a film on the bar, and a warm tank breathes as it cools, so a small amount of oil migrates out whenever the saw sits. Managing the tank level and the saw's position keeps that oil off your shelf.
Why does a chainsaw leak oil when it's switched off?
A chainsaw leaks oil at rest because the oil tank is vented and the bar sits below the reservoir. As a warm saw cools, air pressure in the tank changes and pushes a little oil through the oiler and out along the bar groove. A full tank leaks more than a low one because there is more oil and more head pressure.
This is normal behaviour, not a fault, on most saws. A saw that pours oil, though, may have a cracked tank or a stuck oiler and is worth a look during your next maintenance check.
How should you store the saw to catch drips?
Store the saw with the tank low and the bar positioned so any residual oil drains into something that catches it. Before a long lay-up, run the reservoir down, wipe the bar and chain, and set the saw flat or bar-down on an absorbent mat or inside a molded hard case.
Match the oil to the season, too, and keep the bar and chain oil container sealed nearby so you can top up only when you're about to cut. A saw stored low on oil and bar-down leaves a shelf clean where a full, flat-stored saw would pool.
Which bar oil weeps least in storage?
A heavier, tackier bar oil and a seasonally matched viscosity weep less in storage than a thin summer oil left in a warm shed. Cold thickens oil and slows the drip, while heat thins it and speeds it, so matching the oil to the season limits how much migrates out.
Bar oils are formulated with tackifiers that help the oil cling to the chain, and a tackier oil is slower to run off a bar at rest. Using a winter-grade or all-season bar and chain oil in cold storage, and not overfilling the reservoir, both cut the amount that weeps onto a shelf. The saw will still leave a film — that is the oiler doing its job — but a matched, tacky oil in a low tank is the least messy combination.
Can you empty the oil tank completely for long storage?
You can drain the bar-oil tank for a long lay-up, and it is the surest way to stop drips, but refill it before the next use — running a saw with a dry oiler ruins the bar and chain in minutes. Drain for storage, never for cutting.
To lay a saw up dry, run the reservoir low through normal use, then tip out or pump the remainder and wipe the bar. An empty tank cannot weep, so the saw stores clean. The trade-off is remembering to refill: the oiler must be feeding oil before the chain touches wood, or friction overheats the bar and blues the chain. Make refilling the reservoir the first step of your recommissioning routine so a dry-stored saw never runs dry in the cut.
A worked example: laying up a saw for winter without oil stains
Consider a gas saw going away for a three-month winter: the goal is a clean shelf and a saw that starts in spring. The routine is to run both tanks low, clean the saw, and store it bar-down in a moulded case.
Work through it in order: cut until the bar-oil reservoir is nearly empty, then run the fuel tank down or fill it with stabilized fuel and run it briefly. Wipe the bar and chain, brush chips from the bar groove, and set the saw bar-down in a hard case with a moulded oil well. Stand the case on a shelf, not the floor. Come spring, the well holds any trace of weeped oil, the shelf stays clean, and refilling the reservoir is the only step before the first cut.
